Scientist has known about Synesthesia for centuries. Francis Galton, a relative of Charles Darwin, was the first to publish a paper on the phenomenon. Unfortunately for him, most thought Synesthesia was either drug induced or an artist fancy.

When behaviorism took over the field of psychology synesthesia as all but forgotten. However, within the past decade interest has peaked and may fascinating discoveries pertaining to synesthesia have been made.



Theories 



Disinhibited Feedback Model - proposes that the cross-activation is due to a decrease of inhibition

Cross-Activation Theory - increased connectivity in synesthetes and between areas of the brain that are not usually connected 

  • ​Potentially due to a reduction in the pruning back of neuronal networks during childhood
